Collaborative Pianists
Instructions for Teachers
- Collaborative pianists may only play for 15 entries. One student in one category = ONE entry.
- A collaborative pianist's name must be entered when registering students. A drop-down list of previous years' pianists will appear in AuditionWare. You may enter the name and contact info of a new pianist if necessary. If using a previously listed pianist, please update their information if needed.
- A collaborative pianist may only play for 15 entries - each category entered counts as one entry: for example, if a student sings in the Classical, Musical Theatre, and Commercial categories, that is three entries.
- It is NOT POSSIBLE to accommodate scheduling requests. Please be sure your accompanist is available for the entire day Friday, and Sunday if necessary.
- As part of the registration process, teacher, students, and pianists will be asked to acknowledge that they have read and comply with NATS Copyright Policy. This happens automatically through AuditionWare. The process is described HERE.
- Students or their teachers are responsible for providing scores for pianists at the Auditions that are copyright compliant. This means:
- Hard copies of books or scores
- Music purchased and downloaded for personal use (from "musicnotes.com" for example) with the acknowledgement visible on the pages
- Musical scores downloaded from IMSLP
STAFF Collaborative Pianists are available for students who cannot bring their own.
- Teachers should make the first contact and secure a commitment to play. Be sure to give the pianist the correct number of events in which a student will be singing. (Limit is 15 entries per accompanist)
- Students should send "study copies" (PDF) of their selections to their pianist. These may only be used in preparation - not performance.
- Students should arrange rehearsal time and confirm method of payment.
- For all rounds of the Audition, students must provide copyright compliant scores for the pianist. See above definitions.
- Payment for preliminary rounds should be made directly to the pianist at the rehearsal. Payment for additional rounds Saturday or Sunday if a student advances.
Can a pianist play from a iPad or tablet?
- YES! The use of iPads and tablets at all levels of NATS auditions is permitted. A pianist may use a personal tablet to display a stored electronic version of sheet music. The same standards of copyright as for any other musical score apply, and the singer and pianist must affirm that they are in compliance with the NATS Copyright Policy.
- For clarification on the use of tablets please visit the NATS Commonly Asked Copyright Questions for Teachers, Accompanists, and Students.
- Audition Chairs are responsible for monitoring copyright practices. If informed about obvious infringement (whether in digital or paper form), they are compelled to address it. Obvious copyright infringement by pianist or singer will result in ineligbility to advance.
