Performance Guidelines
IA High School Girls; IB High School Boys (repeatable divisions)
Age and experience: Grade 10-12; upper age limit = 19;
Singing Time: 8 minutes-preliminary round; no semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round
Repertoire: Two art songs of contrasting styles and composers (or) one may be an aria.
Language: English plus one other language – see language rule under repertoire requirements.
Performance: Two selections, memorized. Performance order is determined by the singer in both rounds.
IC High School Musical Theater Girls; ID High School Musical Theater Boys (repeatable divisions)
Age and experience: Grade 10-12; upper age limit = 19;
Singing Time: 8 minutes-preliminary round; no semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round
Repertoire: Two selections from stage musicals of contrasting styles and composers (or) one aria from operetta and one selection from a stage musical. [NOTE: Only selections from stage musicals can be used; no TV, film musicals or popular songs allowed Operetta arias will be allowed only in the Musical Theater divisions.]
Language: No foreign language is required; see language rule under repertoire requirements.
Performance: Two selections, memorized. Performance order is determined by the singer in both rounds.
IIA Freshman Women; IIB Freshman Men (divisions not repeatable)
Age and experience: Freshman class or less than one year of post high school voice study; upper age limit 20;
Singing Time: 8 minutes-preliminary round ; 6 minutes-semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round
Repertoire: Two art songs of contrasting styles and composers (or) one aria and an art song.
Language: English plus one other language - see language rule under repertoire requirements.
Performance: Two selections, memorized. Performance order is determined by the singer in all three rounds.
IIC Sophomore Women; IID Sophomore Men (divisions not repeatable)
Age and experience: Soph. class or one/two years of post high school voice study; upper age limit 21
Singing Time: 10 minutes-preliminary round; 6 minutes-semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round
Repertoire: Three art songs of contrasting styles and composers (or) one aria and two art songs.
Language: English plus at least one other language - see language rule under repertoire requirements.

IIE Lower College Musical Theater Women; IIF Lower College Musical Theater Men (divisions repeatable once)
Age and experience: Fresh/Soph class or one/two years of post high school voice study; upper age limit 21
Singing Time: 10 minutes-preliminary round; 6 minutes-semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round
Repertoire: Three selections from stage musicals of contrasting styles and composers; (or) one aria from operetta and two selections from stage musicals. IIIC Senior Women; IIID Senior Men (divisions not repeatable)
Age and experience: Senior class or three/four years of post high school voice study; upper age limit 23;
Singing Time: 10 minutes-preliminary round; 6 minutes-semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round
Repertoire: One aria and three art songs of contrasting styles and composers.
Language: English plus at least two other languages – see language rule under repertoire requirements.
Performance: Three of the four selections will be performed, memorized. The aria is required; the student chooses an art song, the judges choose an art song, and the student determines the performance order in all three rounds.
IIIE Continuing Senior Women/ Men (division not repeatable)
Age and experience: Senior+ class or four/five years of post high school voice study; upper age limit 25;
Singing Time: 10 minutes-preliminary round; 6 minutes-semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round
Repertoire: One aria and three art songs of contrasting styles and composers.
Language: English plus at least two other languages – see language rule under repertoire requirements.
Performance: Three of the four selections will be performed, memorized. The aria is required; the student chooses an art song, the judges choose one, and the student determines the performance order in all three rounds.
IIIG Upper College Musical Theater Women; IIIH Upper College Musical Theater Men (divisions repeatable twice)
Age and experience: Junior/Senior or more than two years of college level voice study; upper age limit 23;
Singing Time: 10 minutes-preliminary round; 6 minutes-semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round
Repertoire: Three selections from stage musicals of contrasting styles and composers; (or) one aria from operetta and two selections from stage musicals. IVA Avocational Adult (repeatable division)
Age and experience: Singers who study voice as an avocation. Singers in this division may not be enrolled in collegiate music degree programs nor have completed music degrees. Lower age limit 21.
Singing Time: 10 minutes-preliminary round; 6 minutes-semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round.
Repertoire: Three art songs of contrasting styles and composers (or) one aria and two art songs.
Language: English plus at least one other language – see language rule under repertoire requirements.
Performance: Three selections, memorized. Performance order is determined by the singer in all three rounds.
IVB Adult Division (repeatable division)
Age and experience: Adults who study voice as a vocation and may be enrolled in or have completed undergraduate degrees in music but are not enrolled in or have completed graduate vocal performance programs. Lower age limit 23.
Singing Time: 10 minutes-preliminary round; 6 minutes-semi-final round; 6 minutes-final round.
Repertoire: One aria and two art songs of contrasting styles and composers.
Language: English plus at least one other language – see language rule under repertoire requirements.
Performance: Three selections, memorized. Performance order is determined by the singer in all three rounds.
V Graduate Adult (repeatable division except for Regional NATSAA auditionees)
Age and experience: Students enrolled in or have completed Master’s and Doctoral vocal performance programs. Singers who have advanced from State to Regional NATSAA are not eligible for any division. Singers who sing in this division may repeat this division but they may not enter a lower division in another year. Upper age limit 35.
Singing Time: 15 minutes-preliminary round; 10 minutes-semi-final round; 8 minutes-final round.
Repertoire: Five selections of contrasting styles and composers – one operatic aria and one from oratorio, mass, cantata, or works titled “concert aria” and three additional art songs one of which was composed since 1950.
Language: English plus at least three other languages.
Performance: A minimum of three selections will be performed. One of the arias is required. The singer has the choice of performing one selection first, which may be an aria. After the singer has sung the first choice, the judges will choose at least two selections from the remaining repertoire and the singer may choose the performance order of those two selections. Time permitting, a fourth or fifth selection may be heard at the discretion of the judges.
