Information for Singers

Prior to Auditions Day

  • Your teacher has registration and scheduling information.
  • You must provide your accompanist with lawful editions of the music you are performing. The use of photocopies is permitted only to facilitate difficult page turns.
  • Your teacher has a UW Eau Claire campus map that shows designated parking lots and performance sites.

Preliminaries

  • You can obtain information about warm-up rooms, food, bathrooms, and your singing site at the Information Table.
  • You should be at your assigned room 15 minutes prior to your scheduled audition time.
  • Copyright Compliance: The National Website states: "Performers in NATS sponsored auditions...shall perform from lawful editions and shall support and obey the law relative to copyright."
  • No photocopies are allowed in the performance except for page turns.
  • Out of print music is acceptable if written permission from the publisher is present at the audition.
  • Music purchased and generated at a store and music generated at websites such as sheetmusic.com may be used if there is proof of purchase (receipt, e-mail, letter) present at the audition.
  • CD ROM printed music will be accepted if the performers have the CD ROM present at their audition. Any other use of photocopies without permission from the copyright holder will result in disqualification.
  • Due to copyright restrictions, no video or audio taping is allowed during the audition.
  • When you enter your singing site, the Room Monitor will check to see that you have lawful editions of music. He/she will then announce your name.
  • Your allotted singing time begins when your name is announced. Before you sing, introduce your accompanist and announce your songs in the order in which you will perform them.
  • In all divisions the singer will determine the performance order of the repertoire in the Preliminary audition (see Performance Guidelines).
  • You are responsible for picking up your comment sheets at the Information Table following both the preliminaries and finals. Comment sheets will not be mailed.
  • Check the audition results throughout the day to find out if you are a Semi-finalist or Finalist and to find out your singing time.
  • If you are chosen to sing in the semi-finals or finals, be sure your accompanist knows where and when you will sing.
  • Notify Dan Johnson-Wilmot immediately if there is any problem with your assigned singing time.
  • All singing times in the preliminary round are 10 minutes, except for High School divisions, which are 8 minutes, and Graduate Adult division, which is 15 minutes.

Semi-Finalists/Finalists

  • If you are chosen to advance to the Semi-finals or Finals, go to the Information Table to find out your assigned singing time and room. Notify your accompanist.
  • No special time accommodation can be made for Semi-finalists or Finalists. If you have a conflict with your assigned time, notify Dan Johnson-Wilmot immediately in the Tally Room so that another singer can be selected.
  • Please be at the performance site, ready to sing 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time.
  • Your singing time for semi-finals and finals is 6 minutes, except in the Graduate Adult Division, where you have 10 minutes for semi-finals and 8 minutes for finals. When you hear the time keeper call TIME, stop singing, bow and exit the room or stage.
  • When you enter your singing site, the Room Monitor will check for lawful editions of music (See Copyright Compliance above). He/she will then announce your name. As in the Preliminaries, timing begins when your name is announced. Before you sing, introduce your accompanist and announce your songs in the order in which you will perform them.
  • Repertoire: In all divisions of semi-final and final rounds, significant portions of at least two selections from the singer’s repertoire must be performed. The selections are chosen and programmed by the singer except in the semi-final round of Graduate Adult where the singer will determine the first selection; the judges will choose second and third selections.
  • Graduate Adult Division: you will choose the first selection and announce it to the judges and audience. After you sing that selection, the judges will tell you what they would like to hear next. This process continues until the allotted time of 10 minutes (Semi-finals) or 8 minutes (Finals) has expired.
  • No special time accommodation will be made for semi-finalists or finalists. If a singer has a conflict with the assigned semi-finals or finals time, s/he should notify Dan Johnson-Wilmot immediately in the Tally Room so that another semi-finalist or finalist can be selected.
  • All Semi-finalists should remain until the Awards Presentation to receive their award certificates and comment sheets. If this is not possible, please designate someone to accept them for you.
  • All Finalists should remain until the Awards Presentation to receive their award certificates, comment sheets and checks. If you must leave before the Awards Presentation, please leave a stamped, self-addressed envelope with the Stage Monitor so that certificates and checks can be mailed.
  • Due to copyright restrictions, no video or audio taping is allowed during the audition.
